Our Classes:
Each week we hold lessons before our dance from 7-8pm – one for everyone no matter their experience. They rotate topics, and cover the main basic steps of Lindy Hop and Charleston focusing on basic footwork patterns and dance moves.
History, musicality, improvisation, and connection skills are woven into every lesson we teach. You can register for the intro series below, or drop in for just one class at the door. For those looking for a more personalized lesson, please reach out to us about private lessons.

Winter 2026 Classes:
The Intro series (Tuesdays 7-8pm) is for folks who are new to swing dancing, or haven’t yet learned all three basic footwork patters. No partner or experience required. Each week introduces a different basic footwork pattern and basic moves: 6-Count Lindy Hop, 8-Count Lindy Hop, and Charleston. You may take these lessons in any order, and our website calendar shows what lesson will be taught each week. Once you feel comfortable with all 3 basics you are invited to advance to our Main Lesson.
The Main Lesson Series (Tuesdays 7-8pm) is a mixed level class that goes beyond the basics. Register for this class is you have already taken all three Intro series classes and feel comfortable with the material. This series runs each quarter, but new students can join at any time and will only be charged for the remainder of the quarter. Winter dates are January 6-February 24.
Performance Crew is an intermediate and advanced class centered around learning and polishing a peice of choreography. Because of the performance focus of this class, dancers are asked to comit to coming to the whole session from start to finish. The Winter Crew will rehearse Jan 7-Feb 11 7:30-9pm at Opus Performing Arts, and perform at the B’ham Swing Jam on February 13th.
Other classes and workshops will be offered once we have sufficient interest. To stay in the loop about when we’ll offer them, sign up for our email list.
If your financial situation would prevent you from participating in these classes, please email bham.hop@gmail.com. Community members have stepped forward to sponsor a limited number of registrations for students who could not otherwise attend.
Looking for dance shoe recommendations? This list has you covered. Also, dancing in socks in class is just fine when you’re getting started (and wearing comfortable shoes to our dances works great!).
Class sizes are limited, so please register early! Please see our Code of Conduct to see what you can do to help keep B’ham Hop a safe place for everyone. Thank you!
